What is the BA Speaker Series?:
The BA Speakers Series hosts PhDs that have transitioned to non-academic careers and experts that help PhDs in this process. Each day of the series we will have a speaker from a different field who will give their insights on transitioning out of academia, what it is like to work in their field of expertise and strategies for building transferable skills such as networking. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions to these experts as part of an informal discussion during this event. Details below.

Speaker Current Position:
Senior Education and Research Specialist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).
Speaker Background:
Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography
Speaker Bio:
George is a former marine biology professor who now uses his scientific diving skills for research at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). As a research and education specialist at MBARI, he also focuses on educational and outreach efforts for students and teaching professionals. Additionally, George currently teaches as an adjunct faculty member at Monterey Peninsula College where he co-teaches an Environmental Science course at night and is part of the first AmericanGeophysical Union LANDInG cohort that will focus on building capacity to effect change (diversity, equity, and inclusion) in the geosciences.
George earned his PhD in Biological Oceanography from UCLA and taught at Flinders University of South Australia before working at MBARI. He has also worked with the California state and National Park systems, Catalina Island Marine Institute, and the Hopkins Marine Station (Stanford University).
